Simple Song

For Alto and Piano
Program Note

Written from the perspective of a widow coping with the loss of her husband, “Simple Song” Takes a dive in to the complexity that is healing from the loss of a loved one. No matter how many simple love songs you can hear or sing, they will still never begin to describe the power of the love she feels for him. Nor can they express the pain in her journey of healing. Hence her feeling fed up with the simple songs of love.

The piece begins with her seemingly embracing what she has left of her simple song but losing it as it grows more complex and flooded with dreary thoughts. She realizes that she cannot forget her life with her husband nor can she live in the present tense of the “simple song” so she leaves the words the same but changed to the past tense to reflect on where she’s been, and looking forward to full healing.
