Compositions
Landings
Commissioned for the 2021 Senior recital of Sammie Cohen
Program Note
Sammie Cohen asked me to write a piece for solo trumpet and piano, and as a trumpet player myself I was stuck for a while on what to do with such a standard instrumentation. I asked her one morning out of the blue “Hey, what inspires you?” and she responded with “haha, what a question for a Saturday morning.” mainly because it was early in the morning.
She then began to explain to me a philosophy she learned from Greg Thomas, a wonderful educator at JMU. She told me: “In teaching (and life in general) is sort of like landing a plane, the plane can crash, and wings can fall off, but as long as you walk out of it you’re okay. Any Landings a good landing.”
This analogy set me sailing to writing this piece to show no matter how hard or low life can get sometimes. Any landing you can make in life will always be successful.
