Compositions

Catharsis For Trumpet and Piano

Program Notes

When we experience pain, we sometimes tend to push it aside and leave it to

fade away. But it doesn't. Doing this does nothing to solve the real problem in your

heart, so your mind does what it can to release that pain and that is through

catharsis.

People usually connect a cathartic act with outburst anger, which is true but

a more effective and long-lasting cathartic act is taking the pain that is bottled up

inside you and releasing it through action and creation. This piece shows a

juxtaposition between the two different avenues of catharsis by presenting the

same pain twice before presenting how it is solved through the five stages of grief.

This is why when finished with the second movement, the pain will be inflicted

once more but it will move into the third movement.

Specifics aside, this piece is a presentation of how we react and how we recover.
